Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005

The Ontario Legislature passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The AODA provides for development and enforcement of accessibility standards.

The purpose of the AODA is to achieve accessibility in stages, allowing organizations to break down barriers over time as part of ongoing business decisions. The government is required by legislation to review these standards every five years and make any necessary revisions. The goal of the AODA is to make the Province of Ontario fully accessible by 2025.

There have currently been five standards developed under the AODA:

  • Customer Service
  • Information and Communication
  • Employment
  • Transportation
  • Built Environment

Currently, the Customer Service Standard is the only AODA standard to become law. The remaining four standards are in various stages of development. The government has not yet announced timelines for the release of the remaining standards.
